Saturday, May 18th: Walking Around London

Hello everyone! Today, the class had a wonderful Saturday afternoon roaming the streets of London. We started off bright and early with breakfast, and then the class embarked to the tube station, eager to meet up with Professor Wolfe.

The first thing we did was take a walking tour of London. We meet up with our tour guide at Trafalgar Square, and went on our way!

One of the first things we did was hop on a number 15 route bus. This bus is one of ten in London, and apart from traveling throughout the whole city, they are also the oldest buses to travel London. Built some time in the 60's, these buses have the same interior as when they were first built. It was amazing to be able to experience a piece of history like this, and it is something that wont be forgotten.

After getting off the bus, the class was able to walk towards a massive outdoor market called The Borough. We were given a half hour to explore, and many members of the class came back with yummy treats and drinks. The tour guide told us that the market was one of the oldest outdoor markets in London, and that she remembered frequenting it when she was a child. From the market, we then walked on to familiar places like the Globe Theater, The London Eye, and King's Cross Station. The tour guide stopped us along the way once or twice to point out places in which the Harry Potter movies were filmed, such as the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron.  It was so cool to be able to walk past places featured in something so iconic as the Harry Potter series. Another very cool place we saw was Victoria Market, which was very easy to tell that it was built during the Victorian Era. It helped to show the class that the city of London is a city brimming with culture, both old and new.

After the tour was over, the class then was able to take the Tube to Portabello Road. Portabello Road is a huge street that's crammed with merchants and vendors. On this road, everything from clothing to signs to food is being sold, and buyers are able to haggle with sellers regarding prices. Because the class had the rest of the day off, Professor Wolfe told the class to break into smaller groups, and that we could leave the road whenever we pleased.

Today was a day that was brimming with new cultural experiences. Unlike some days where the group has to always stick together, we were given the chance to explore an area on our own. We were able to go at our own pace, and people could chose what they wanted to do. Today was a fantastic day, and a lovely way to spend a Saturday in London.
