Thursday, May 9th: Oxford

Hello darlings! Today was a lovely, laid back day in which the class took a day trip to Oxford. Oxford, a town about 40 minutes outside of London is most famously known for Oxford University, one of England's most prestigious schools. After a quick breakfast at Regent's College, the class took a train to the town of Oxford.

Christ Church College
Unlike Elmira and Regent's College, Oxford University,  is actually comprised of 39 different colleges, all of which have different fields of study. When taking a bus tour of Oxford, we got to see some of the universities. We learned that most of the older colleges that comprise Oxford University actually started out as residential halls for the students who were attending Oxford. These houses were set up to allow students to have a room with steady rent, but also allowed their professors to better control the students. These residential houses then morphed into the many colleges that make up Oxford University today. Unlike Elmira College, Oxford University is set in a sprawling city atmosphere, and while it still has most of the amenities of a small college town, the urban setting  provides for a unique learning experience.

Oxford is also famous for its Covered Market Place. This is an indoor market comprised of a plethora of small businesses, and when walking around, you feel free from the chain establishments that cover most of London. As part of the class,  the group was able to split up into several smaller groups and explore for an hour. We got to pick what we wanted to get for lunch, and at the end of a hour and a half, the group met back up and together we walked to the train station and set off for Regent's College.

Today was a very exciting day as we got to see and experience the difference between colleges in different countries. Oxford University (or rather the many colleges that it is made up of) is very different from Elmira College, and it is important for students to understand the differences in order to broaden their cultural horizon.
