Monday, May 13th: Cardiff

Cardiff streets with Welsh flags
Pip pip, cheerio! Hello from Cardiff! Today was quite a fantastic day for our class! We started off bright and early, leaving Regent's College at 7 AM. We took a train from Paddington Station to Cardiff, Wales and arrived at about 10 AM. The train ride to Wales was very beautiful, with a lovely view of the bay. Once we got to the Cardiff Train Station, the group went over our plans for the day. A few members of the group wanted to see the Doctor Who Experience, while the rest went on a tour of Cardiff Castle. So, the class jumped on a hop on/hop off bus and parted ways at the separate stops.

Doctor Who is a BBC science-fiction show that made its debut in 1963. It stars the time-traveling Doctor and his companion, and it takes viewers through fantastic journeys through time and space. Re-made in 2005, Doctor Who has had several famous stars, including Matt Smith, David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston, Karen Gillian and Billie Pipper. Doctor Who is a major staple of British culture, as it is one of the most well-known BBC shows. Doctor Who has a massive fan base (known as Whovians) and the original show has spurned many spin offs including Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Chronicles  as well as hundreds books/audiobooks. The exhibit was a fantastic experience unlike any we've had thus far on our trip, and it is something that will be remembered for a very long time.

The group that went to Cardiff Castle also had a lovely time on their day's adventure! The Castle was built late in the 11th century by Norman Invaders. The Castle was handed down from family to family, until in the 1940's, it was given to the city of Cardiff as a gift to the state. Today, the Castle is used as a museum to showcase the amazingly fascinating  history of the Welsh people. One building on the grounds was a mansion that the inside was decorated and designed during the Victorian period. These rooms were very lavish in their designs and were very beautiful to look at. After roaming the Castle, the class was able to dine on a traditional Welsh meal: lamb stew and cheese. After this lovely lunch, the two groups meet up at the Castle, and embarked on the journey back to London.

Today was a lovely day, as two groups of people got to explore their interests. We all came to Wales looking to gain separate sets of knowledge, and I think that goal was achieved. Wales is a country that is filled with history, and that rich historical background was made very evident to the class today.
